Keven Grass Workshop: Structural Figure Drawing

  • Old Hyde Park Art Center 705 West Swann Avenue Tampa, FL, 33606 United States (map)

About the Workshop:

The human figure is a particularly difficult drawing subject for several reasons: 1) there is a strong tendency to draw what is expected rather than what is actually present, 2) the figure is very complex, making the characteristics of the forms and their relationships to one another difficult to understand, and 3) the drawing process can be very frustrating when too many variables are addressed at one time. The best way to overcome these problems is to conceive of the figure as a series of simpler geometric forms. A simplified interpretation of the figure makes it easier to develop accurate proportional relationships, deal with foreshortening, and accurately articulate the major elements. Values are also easier to develop in blocky figures because lighting may be enhanced with decisions that address changes in plane, allowing for clearer rendering of the details.

This workshop will introduce you to several approaches to simplifying the human figure into a series of geometric forms. Drawings will initially focus on establishing the head, rib cage, and pelvis for each pose. Longer drawings in the second half of the workshop will allow time for development of the limbs and details. A full range of values addressing planar form will be introduced into the longer poses.
