Portraits in Charcoal & Pastel Workshop with Cora Waterhouse

This 2-day workshop StARTS at the beginning on the morning of day one with tonal drawings of the planes of the face and head. Waterhouse introduces the 3 Principles of Drawing and how they can be used to draw facial feature relationships. A model will sit in the afternoon for a study portrait drawing in charcoal.

Day two will be spent entirely on a pastel portrait of the same model. Students will create an under sketch during a second sitting in the morning. All afternoon will be spent completing a pastel portrait from charcoal studies, paste and under sketches and photographs.

Artist Profile

Since moving to Tampa in 2017, Cora Waterhouse has taught children for the Dali in St. Pete, and for HCC in Tampa. She has written and has been teaching her StART series of adult classes for over 15 years to international students in the US, Singapore, and Malaysia. She’s led workshops in Singapore and Georgia, and now teaches at Old Hyde Park Art Center.

18” x 24” newsprint paper

Charcoal sticks, Medium Vine or Willow

Kneaded Eraser

4 Color Pastel Pencils:          

                 Alizarin Crimson or Dark Sanguine

                 Cadmium Red

                 Prussian Blue

                 Cornflower Blue

White & black pencils (in either charcoal or pastel).

Rembrandts basic set of 15 sticks + the following Rembrandt colors:

339.8 Rouge Anglais 

231.10 Gold Ochre

 

Cora will bring powdered or condensed charcoal and pastel paper to share.

 

Students are welcome to use their own like-quality soft pastels. Please be certain of hues and value sameness of each color we will be using.
