Artist’s Statement

“Paint only what you like and paint LOTS.”–Anne Abgott

Anne Abgott is an award-winning artist and a Signature member of over 10 watercolor societies including these prestigious associations: the American Watercolor Society(AWS), the Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA), the National WatercolorSociety (NWS), and the San Diego WatercolorSociety (SDWS). She is an accomplished and respected teacher and the author of the best-selling instructional book“Daring Color.” She is also the current president of the Artists Guild of Anna Marie Island.

Born in Ontario, Canada, Anne began painting in oils as a teenager. After moving to the United States, she began to explore the wonderful world of watercolor. Impatient with the typical layering and glazing processes of water, she started to move paint directly from the palette wells onto watercolor paper. While Anne’s unique painting technique contributes to her signature style, Anne feels that design and composition are equally important to creating powerful paintings. In fact, she says they can be more difficult to master. And after many years of painting, Anne feels she is still learning. Every day presents new challenges and meeting them gives her a sense of happiness and accomplishment at the end of the day. So now Anne is only interested in painting images that test her abilities, saying, “If I don’t think I can do it, it lights my fire!” Recently Anne completed an award-winning series of women’s shoes entitled “The Shoe Shrine,” which were inspired by a neighbor’s closet. Her recent series of palm trees also won awards. The March/April 2022 issue of Artist’s Magazine “Over 50” featured one of her paintings. And most recently Anne had a beautiful write-up in the 53rd issue of “The Art of Watercolor.”
