Zoom Workshop: Book Binding Your Own Sketchbook with Cynthia Lizardi
About the Instructor:
Cynthia is an acrylic painter with a Bachelor’s in Art Studio from the University of South Florida. She adores books and started to make books that would fit her needs as an artist. Cynthia creates books using varying methods and materials, usually by up-cycling leftover drawing paper, sketchpad backs, cereal boxes and printed t-shirts.
About the Workshop:
Do you love handmade books? Always wanted know how to make one that matches your style or needs? In this workshop, Cynthia will be show you how to hand bind a blank journal or sketchbook using the Coptic stitch method. Coptic stitch is a bookbinding method dating back to the Early Christians in Egypt, the Copts, used from the 2nd Century AD to the 11th Century AD. Coptic stitch binding, in the modern usage, leaves the spine exposed and allows the pages to lay flat when the book is opened.
We will go over making the covers using book board covered with decorative paper or fabric. It's a fine way to use leftover sketchbook paper and your favorite t-shirt! Nothing too high tech here: just glue, needle, thread and a couple other things,. We will create a journal (or sketchbook) you're sure to love using things you may already have in your studio.
